The Villa Wolf estate, originally founded as J.L. Wolf, is situated in the charming village of Wachenheim in Germany’s Pfalz region. The estate is named after the elegant Italianate Villa built in 1843 during a prosperous era for the region. In 1996, Ernst Loosen of the renowned Dr. Loosen estate in the Mosel took over, aiming to apply his Riesling expertise to Pfalz, while also focusing on regional varietals like Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Dornfelder.
Patrick Moellendorf, who joined Villa Wolf in 2011, leads the viticulture and winemaking, emphasising sustainable vineyard practices, gentle fruit handling, and traditional, minimalist winemaking. Their Villa Wolf varietal wines are celebrated for offering excellent quality, consistency, and varietal accuracy, making them a great value.
Villa Wolf Pinot Gris is crafted using a mix of large, neutral oak casks to add depth and complexity, concrete tanks for a smooth texture, and stainless steel to maintain freshness and highlight the vibrant fruit.
This wine offers the full, ripe spiciness of Pinot Gris on the nose, complemented by a delightful hint of lemon. It has a full body, but delivers a substantial, stony presence on the palate, with a long, satisfying finish and well-balanced acidity.
Food pairing suggestion: Spiced salmon with roast asparagus.
