Torbreck The Struie is a masterful Shiraz that harmonises the robust intensity of the Barossa Valley with the refined elegance of the Eden Valle*, offering a wine of remarkable depth, structure, and balance. This celebrated blend exemplifies Torbreck’s commitment to creating wines that express the full potential of their regional terroir.
Torbreck, founded in 1994 by David Powell, is one of Australia’s most esteemed wineries, celebrated for its dedication to the Barossa’s ancient vines and traditional winemaking practices. The winery takes its name from a forest in Scotland, reflecting Powell’s heritage and his respect for nature. Torbreck has earned a reputation for crafting rich, concentrated wines, often from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Today, Torbreck continues to honour the region’s vinous heritage while embracing modern techniques to refine and elevate their offerings.
The Struie sources Shiraz grapes from two distinct regions:
– Barossa Valley: Known for its warm climate and ancient soils, it contributes bold, ripe black fruit flavours, richness, and power to the wine.
– Eden Valley: The cooler, high-altitude region imparts lifted aromatics, fresh acidity, and fine tannins, bringing elegance and balance to the blend.
Torbreck employs traditional winemaking techniques, including small-batch fermentation and careful extraction, to preserve the purity and complexity of the fruit. The wine is matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barrels for approximately 18 months, allowing it to develop structure, depth, and a velvety texture while maintaining its vibrant character.
The Struie is deep garnet in colour with a captivating bouquet of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry, interwoven with floral notes of violets, hints of dark chocolate, and subtle spices like cinnamon and clove. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, offering layers of luscious dark fruit, licorice, and black pepper, framed by silky tannins and balanced acidity. The oak ageing adds a gentle touch of vanilla and toasted cedar, enhancing the wine’s complexity without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long and luxurious, with a harmonious interplay of richness and elegance.
