Sassicaia 2021: Vintage
This vintage is a triumph, showcasing the remarkable potential of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc when nurtured by ideal terroir and skilled craftsmanship. Winter rains revitalised the soil, setting the stage for a sunny, warm early spring. A potential frost threat in April was effectively managed, and the hot, dry summer produced smaller, more intensely flavored berries. Timely rains later ensured the grapes achieved full ripeness, culminating in a beautifully balanced wine.
Sassicaia 2021: Winemaking
The estate spans over 2,500 hectares, but only the most suitable areas, characterised by unique soil types, microclimates, and exposures, are planted with vines. The soil primarily consists of limestone rich in marl and pebbles, with some clay content. The vines are situated at elevations ranging from 80 to 400 meters above sea level, with a west/south-west exposure.
The typical blend consists of about 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in stainless steel vats, and the wines are aged in French oak barriques, with a small portion also aged in American oak.
Sassicaia 2021: In The Glass
The Tenuta San Guido 2021 Bolgheri Sassicaia exhibits flawless balance and excellent freshness, with no signs of over-ripeness. The fruit is perfectly balanced, offering a touch of crunch and enduring tension from the pulp and skins. The tannins are expertly handled, providing a firm grip along with a velvety texture that adds both volume and length. The bouquet reveals no greenness; instead, it presents mulled herbs and spices, including cinnamon and clove, interwoven with a blend of red and some purple berry fruits. Notable flavours include redcurrant, blueberry, sweet pomegranate, and Rainier cherry, with a fragrant hint of heritage rose emerging over time. The oak influences are subtle, contributing notes of gingerbread, hazelnut, cigar, sandalwood, and a hint of grilled sweet red pepper. On the palate, the wine offers substantial weight without heaviness, complemented by a refreshing acidity that enhances its natural energy, brightness, and viscosity.
Will continue to improve in bottle for 20+ years.
