Penfolds St Henri Shiraz is a graceful and expressive take on Australian Shiraz, standing apart from Penfolds’ more oak-driven styles. Unlike Grange or RWT, St Henri is matured in large, seasoned oak vats, allowing the pure fruit character and elegant structure to shine.
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz, The Producer
Founded in 1844, Penfolds is one of Australia’s most legendary wineries, known for its age-worthy and highly collectible wines. St Henri was first introduced in the 1950s as an alternative to the more robust and oak-driven Grange, offering a softer, more fruit-focused interpretation of Shiraz. Over the years, it has developed a cult following for its understated power, longevity, and ability to develop beautifully with age.
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz, Terroir and Winemaking
Sourced from a blend of premium South Australian vineyards, including Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Eden Valley, the 2021 vintage reflects the cooler conditions of the growing season. This led to slower ripening and enhanced aromatic complexity, resulting in a structured yet refined wine.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel, followed by 12 months of ageing in large, old oak vats. The use of seasoned oak ensures no overt wood influence, allowing the pristine fruit and velvety tannins to take centre stage.
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2021, Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage is a refined, medium-bodied expression, with fine tannins and exceptional balance.
A vibrant duo of wild cherry and pomegranate leads the charge, complemented by enticing hints of golden custard tart and toasted sourdough, adding depth and intrigue. Ironstone minerality weaves through the palate, enhancing its refined savouriness and creating a captivating tension that lingers with each sip. The tannins, though firm and tightly knit, possess a velvety elegance, promising to evolve gracefully over time. A wine of finesse and complexity, balancing richness with precision.
This sophisticated Shiraz is already enjoyable in its youth but will develop greater complexity over 15–20 years, revealing more layers of spice, earthiness, and secondary character over time.
