Penfolds Bin 798 is a luxurious and refined expression of Barossa Valley Shiraz, crafted with Penfolds’ signature precision. Unlike its powerhouse sibling, Grange, which blends fruit from multiple regions, RWT (Red Winemaking Trial) Shiraz focuses exclusively on Barossa Valley fruit and matures in French oak, resulting in a wine that is opulent, silky, and exquisitely balanced.
Penfolds Bin 798, The Producer
Founded in 1844, Penfolds is one of Australia’s most iconic wineries, renowned for its pioneering approach and commitment to excellence. Over the decades, Penfolds has built a reputation for producing world-class, cellar-worthy wines, with a portfolio that ranges from everyday drinking to some of the most collectible bottles in the world. The RWT Shiraz project began in 1997 as an alternative to Grange, showcasing a more refined and fruit-driven style with a focus on single-region sourcing.
Penfolds Bin 798, Terroir and Winemaking
Sourced from premium vineyards across Barossa Valley, this Shiraz benefits from the region’s warm climate, ancient soils, and old vines, which contribute to its depth, concentration, and complexity. The 2022 vintage was marked by moderate conditions, allowing for even ripening and excellent fruit expression.
Fermentation occurs in small open fermenters, followed by aging in French oak hogsheads (80% new, 20% seasoned) for 16 months. The use of French oak instead of American oak, as seen in Grange, lends the wine finesse, fine-grained tannins, and well-integrated spice.
Penfolds Bin 798, Tasting Notes
Bright white cherry and cherry pip take center stage, their lively fruitiness enriched by subtle chocolate undertones. Layers of red and blue fruits — mulberries and red currants — unfold, offering a vibrant spectrum of berry flavours. Hints of grape confection sweetness mingle with the delicate spiciness of pink peppercorns, adding depth and intrigue. The wine’s structure is taut and expressive, hinting at complexity that will evolve beautifully over time. Youthful yet refined tannins interplay with precise acidity, ensuring every sip is as compelling as the last. A true reflection of the Barossa Valley’s bold and expressive character.
While already expressive in its youth, this exceptional Barossa Shiraz has the potential to age gracefully for 15–25 years, evolving into a wine of even greater complexity and allure.
Food pairing suggestion: Venison Wellington.
