Jesús Madrazo (or affectionately called Chus) pioneered Contino estate, founded by his father, José Madrazo Real de Asúa. Now, Jesús is making wine on his own, and he is rightly regarded as one of Spain’s leading winemakers with a devoted following around the world.
Jesús Madrazo comes from one of the founding families of Compania Vinicola del Norte de España (CVNE). His father, José, co-founded Contino in 1973, establishing it as the first single estate in Rioja. Following in his family’s footsteps, Jesús, the fifth generation of the CVNE founding family, joined the winemaking team in Haro in 1995. By 1999, he was appointed Senior Winemaker at Contino, where he gained global acclaim, particularly for creating Spain’s first-ever 100% Graciano wine.
In 2017, Jesús left Contino to pursue new challenges, launching his own venture with an initial focus on crafting unique wines from DOCa Rioja and DO Ribera del Duero. He is also involved in several other exciting projects across Spain.
This exquisite blend of 92% Tempranillo and 8% Garnacha Tinto, sourced from a single biodynamically farmed vineyard plot known as El Abuelo. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, which imparts a beautifully complex character. It showcases a concentrated profile of red and black fruits, complemented by hints of balsamic herbs. The ageing process adds layers of toast, vanilla, and coconut, creating a rich and well-rounded wine that exemplifies the craftsmanship of Jesús Madrazo.
