Celebrated for her handcrafted southern French wines from ancient vines, Jones utilises several grape varieties intrinsic to the region. Here, hundreds of old vines are ripped up or abandoned every year. At Domaine Jones, the producers believe that old vines produce the best quality wine, so they try to preserve them as they are: in harmony with the terroir.
Most other growers around here wouldn’t be interested in Katie’s modest 12 hectares of vines spread across vineyards in Paziols and Tuchan. The sites are too small, too remote, and too labour-intensive. Exactly the way she likes them! Katie aims for low yields with high quality, and the rather poor, sloping ground that the very old, traditional vines cling to provides just that. This means that most of the work, including harvesting, has to be done by hand, but the results are more than worth the effort.
This intriguing white blend is her creative interpretation of a “white Fitou.” Macabeu, Grenache Gris, and Grenache Blanc are handpicked from five small parcels of old vines scattered around the village of Tuchan in the Aude. Each variety is fermented separately, with the free-run juice going into vats and the press juice going into oak barrels. Highly expressive, Les Parcelles is blended and bottled in the spring.
