The 2020 harvest was one of the earliest on record in Burgundy. Picking began considerably sooner for many growers than during the terrible heatwave of 2003. But, after five weeks of tasting in the region’s cellars, it is clear that these wines bore no relation to the 2003s.
This vintage was warm and dry, picked in the late August sun. Amazingly, both colours have a remarkable freshness and clarity. And, arguably, the quality hierarchy is more accurately depicted than in ’19. The vitality in these wines defied our expectations in cellar after cellar.
This Pinot offers an intensely aromatic bouquet of ripe black fruit, such as blackberry and black cherry, along with floral notes of violet, rose, and iris, and subtle hints of spice, such as clove and cinnamon. As the wine opens up, more complex aromas of leather, forest floor, and tobacco emerge, adding layers of depth and complexity. It is full-bodied, rich, and complex wine, with a silky texture and a perfect balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins. The flavours mirror the aromas, with a rich blend of black fruit, floral notes, and spice, along with subtle earthy and mineral undertones that add complexity and depth.
Best enjoyed between 2026 and 2049, this wine offers a generous drinking window, allowing its character to evolve beautifully over time.
