Domaine Lafage is a family-run business, dating over 2 centuries back. In the 80s, Jean-Marc, as a young boy, was deeply involved in vineyard work. However, his true calling as a winemaker became apparent when his father entrusted him with a batch of his finest Maury grapes. This pivotal moment ignited Jean-Marc’s passion for winemaking.
Having experienced harvest and winemaking seasons in South America, the United States (California), South Africa, and Australia, Jean-Marc alongside his wife Elaine, gained valuable insights and perspectives on winemaking practices from diverse regions around the world.
Returning to France, they found themselves with 36 hectares of family land spread around Perpignan, Canet, and Maury. It wasn’t until 2001 that they fully assumed control of the entire family estate.
The vineyard of Domaine Lafage spans over 350 hectares across the entirety of Roussillon. The Syrah and Grenache vines grow in the Agly Valley, near the village of Maury in the heart of Roussillon, at the foot of the Pyrenees.
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo fermentation in controlled conditions, typically maintained between 20 and 25°C. During fermentation, the winemaker employs a technique known as “pigeage,” which involves gently pushing down the grape skins into the fermenting juice. This gentle extraction method helps to extract colour, flavour, and tannins from the skins without imparting harsh or bitter characteristics to the wine.
A beautifully balanced red, with aromas of small black fruits, which unfold in the mouth with some notes of sweet spices and smooth tannins. Soft-textured, juicy, and super easy to enjoy!
