Petite Sirah, also known as Petit Syrah, is a cross between Syrah and Peloursin, created by botanist François Durif in the late 19th century. Despite its name, it is not a smaller version of Syrah but a distinct grape variety. It is known for its high tannin content and robust structure, making it one of the most tannic wines available.

Petite Sirah is a relatively rare grape variety, mostly produced in Napa Valley, California. It is sometimes used in blends, to which it contributes its unique inky purple colour. Petite Sirah wines are full-bodied with flavours of dark fruits like blueberry and plum, along with notes of chocolate, black pepper, and sometimes a hint of floral or mineral elements.

‘Petit Syrah’ is the name that is used in Portuguese language. For example, Alentejo, a region in Portugal, is known for producing robust and flavourful wines, and Petit Syrah is no exception, with its unique mintiness and ripe fruit aroma.

Due to its high tannin and acidity levels, Petite Sirah has excellent aging potential. Petite Sirah pairs wonderfully with rich, savoury foods that can stand up to its full-bodied nature and high tannins, such as red meat or dishes with tomato sauces. Balance the boldness of Petite Sirah with equally flavourful dishes and don’t forget to appreciate its unique tint of purple.
