Maison Louis Jadot
Founded in 1859, Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most respected and influential wine producers. With a rich history spanning over 160 years, the estate is dedicated to producing wines that express the unique terroirs of Burgundy’s diverse vineyards. Jadot owns or manages over 240 hectares of vineyards across Burgundy, from regional wines to grand crus, and is renowned for its meticulous approach to both viticulture and winemaking. Their philosophy focuses on minimal intervention, allowing each wine to reflect its origin with purity and precision.
The vineyards of Savigny-lès-Beaune lie to the northwest of Beaune in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy. Nestled between the hills of Corton and Beaune, this appellation benefits from a continental climate with warm summers and cool nights, ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The soils in this area are a mix of limestone and clay, contributing to the wine’s structure, minerality, and ageing potential.
Savigny is renowned for its predominantly red wines, with 90% of its production coming from the village and premier cru appellations. The vineyards benefit from a variety of exposures, including south, southeast, east, and northeast, situated at altitudes ranging from 220 to 360 meters. The soils are predominantly chalky, gravelly, or stony, and are light and infertile, contributing to the distinct character of the wines. These challenging conditions promote low yields, allowing the vines to produce wines with depth, elegance, and complexity.
Louis Jadot Savigny Les Beaune 2014 Vintage
The autumn and winter were mild with sufficient rainfall, setting a solid foundation for the growing season. March’s excellent weather led to early, vigorous vine growth, while a few late frosts caused minimal damage. Spring and early summer allowed for precise vineyard work, with early flowering in June across Burgundy. However, Chardonnay struggled with poor fruit set due to dry conditions.
Summer weather was ideal for controlling fungal diseases, but a violent hailstorm on June 28th affected several communes in the Côte d’Or, particularly Beaune and Pommard. Despite heavy rainfall in August, the dry weather returned in early September, aiding ripening. Harvest began on September 11th, with exceptional Chardonnays and some selection needed for the Pinots. The harvest was fast and intense due to the favourable conditions.
