Yet again, we eagerly expect the new release of Georges Duboeuf’s Beaujolais Nouveau. 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of Georges Duboeuf wines so it’s a great reason to celebrate!
Each year, on the third Thursday of November, the world rejoices at the release of highly anticipated Beaujolais Nouveau wines. Bottled just a few weeks after the harvest, the wines are a preview of the vintage to come, as well as a celebration of the bounty of the Beaujolais harvest.
The origins of Georges Duboeuf trace back more than 400 years to the wine-making traditions of the Duboeuf family in the Mâconnais region. At a remarkably young age, Georges Duboeuf received his first lessons in winemaking from his uncle and brother. His passion for winemaking led him to abandon his studies at just 18 years old to take charge of the family estate in Chaintré, a picturesque village in Pouilly-Fuissé.
In the early 1950s, Georges embarked on two ambitious journeys fuelled by his unwavering passion and spirit of adventure. First, he pioneered bespoke bottling, a groundbreaking approach that involved bottling wine directly at the producers’ vineyards, rather than selling it in casks. To achieve this, Georges ingeniously converted a truck into a mobile bottling line, revolutionizing the industry. Concurrently, he founded L’Ecrin Mâconnais-Beaujolais, a consortium of wine producers representing the various appellations within the region.
In 1964, Georges Duboeuf officially established Les Vins Georges Duboeuf, with the invaluable support of his wife, Rolande. Georges brought innovation to winemaking through techniques such as meticulous selection and blending, a deep respect for the winegrowers’ craftsmanship, and a commitment to superb bottling practices.
Throughout his journey, Georges Duboeuf remained dedicated to his initial vision: crafting premium wines that harmoniously blend the distinctive characteristics of their terroirs with a bold and expressive character. He became a trailblazer in the wine industry and a global ambassador for Beaujolais and Mâconnais wines, traveling the world to share and promote his exceptional wines. Georges Duboeuf’s legacy continues to inspire and enrich the world of winemaking with his unwavering passion and commitment to quality.
