Eisenstone pays homage to the rich German heritage of the Barossa Valley by combining the German word for iron, Eisen, with the English word for stone. The name represents the ironstone soil in which the vines grow and the stone that was used by the early German settlers to construct many of the iconic Barossa buildings that still stand today.
Eisenstone’s goal is to establish themselves as experts in Barossa Valley Shiraz, the region’s renowned and internationally recognized variety. They aim to create a limited collection of wines that reflect the subtle variations in climate, soil type, and topography within the Valley and its sub-regions, and how these factors contribute to the final product.
The grapes used in this wine were carefully selected from Adrian Hoffmann’s vineyard in Ebenezer, located in the northern part of the Barossa Valley. The wine was produced by fermenting small batches of grapes and then aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak barrels before being bottled.
2020 Vintage:
The 2020 vintage presented significant challenges for the Barossa wine industry, with yields falling at least 50% below the 10-year average.
However, the silver lining is the exceptional quality of the fruit, ensuring Barossa’s wines continue to be highly sought after in both domestic and international markets.
The reduced yield can be attributed to a combination of factors, including below-average rainfall during winter and spring, erratic spring weather conditions, and a particularly hot, dry December and early January. These challenges underscore the resilience of the region’s winemakers and their commitment to crafting premium wines despite adverse conditions.
Deep red-purple in hue, this wine opens with an enticing aroma of sweet blackberries, complemented by hints of dark chocolate and vanilla. On the palate, it is concentrated and plush, offering a rich core of fruit sweetness balanced by a warm touch of alcohol. Supple tannins add depth and structure, leading to a lingering finish where the chocolate notes reappear, leaving a lasting impression. A superb wine, embodying power and elegance.
2021 Vintage:
The quality of the 2021 vintage in Barossa Valley is considered to be exceptional. The reds are characterised by intense, rich, and balanced flavours and colours and excellent natural acidity. This is a vintage that will shine both now and in the long term. Autumn and late Spring brought relatively good rainfall, ensuring that soil moisture levels were adequate as the vineyards entered Summer. Combined with reasonably cool summer temperatures, this kept the vines healthy, allowing a good number of bunches to set and maintaining berry size at optimal levels for producing high-quality wine grapes.
This Shiraz is rich and deep in colour with a purple hue. The flavours are concentrated yet exhibit finesse and poise, characteristic of the Northern Barossa. The nose reveals classic aromas of blueberry and savoury oak. On the palate, abundant berry fruit is supported by a tight tannin structure that pulls the wine together, offering remarkable persistence.
This wine is expected to continue to age gracefully until at least 2036.
