McLaren Vale is home to some of Australia’s oldest vines, with origins dating back to 1850. While McLaren Vale is best known for its Shiraz, it also excels in producing ultra-premium Grenache. Chester, a fourth-generation Osborn, crafts distinctive wines under the d’Arenberg label, by employing traditional methods in both the vineyard and the winery.
This wine was crafted in honour of d’Arenberg principal, Francis ‘d’Arry’ d’Arenberg Osborn, celebrating over half a century of his winemaking career at the family winery in McLaren Vale. d’Arry’s original blend, first introduced around four decades ago, remains unchanged as a blend of Shiraz and Grenache sourced from d’Arenberg’s low-yielding, 19th-century vineyards. The d’Arry’s Original has achieved significant success at shows over the years and has been instrumental in establishing the reputation of d’Arenberg.
The wine is basket pressed and transferred to a mix of new and used French oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, with no racking until the final blending. This wine undergoes no fining or filtration before bottling.
This is a blend of Shiraz and Grenache grapes, resulting in a complex and generous wine with a diverse range of flavours and aromas. The nose offers fresh red berries, cassis, and a hint of smokiness, while the palate delivers rich, vibrant dark fruit flavours accented by hints of spice and oak. Well-rounded tannins create a lingering, mouthwatering, and satisfying finish.
Food pairing suggestion: Smoked turkey.
