Alpha Estate Xinomavro Syrah, ‘Axia’ is a red wine produced by Alpha Estate. The wine is a blend of two grape varieties: Xinomavro and Syrah, with Xinomavro being the predominant grape. Xinomavro is a native grape variety of Greece and is known for producing complex, tannic wines with high acidity.

Alpha Estate, located in Amyndeo, North West Greece, was formed in 1997 by the viticulturist Makis Mavridis and the chemist-oenologist Angelos Iatridis. After working for many years in different parts of Greece, Iatridis decided to make his own wine in the Amyndeon region. The climate here is perfect for Xinomavro due to its fresh summers and cool evenings allowing for concentration to develop and resulting in wine which is a true expression of the region’s unique terroir.

This is a luxurious, rich, full-bodied red wine with an enchanting aroma. In the glass, the wine has a deep ruby colour with purple hues. On the nose, this wine has a complex bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries, with hints of vanilla, tobacco, and spicy notes of black pepper and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is dense and velvety, with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.  Flavours of dark fruit dominate, with hints of black pepper and herbs adding complexity. The finish is long and persistent. The Xinomavro grape gives this wine a sharp acidity and tannin structure, while the Syrah adds a touch of spiciness and richness to the flavour profile. The wine has been aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, which gives it a smooth and elegant texture.

It is a wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to come.

Food pairing suggestion: this blend is a perfect pairing for hearty meat dishes like lamb, beef, or game, as well as rich pasta dishes and aged cheeses.
