Argentinian Wine Tasting at Edgbaston – With Altos Las Hormigas

We can’t say how excited we are for this tasting. We are joined by one of the great young winemakers in the world at the moment Federico Gambetta from Altos Las Hormigas (pictured in the image with Phil) he works on expressing the beautiful fruit Malbec offers by limiting oak usage and focusing purity on the purity of the fruit. Altos Las Hormigas were one of the producers Phil tried for the first time when he was in Argentina last April. He was blown away by the attention to detail in making the wines, but also the quality of the wines they produce.

Altos Las Hormigas are one of the pioneers of the new style of Argentinian wine, which is focused on Organic practices, as well as the liberal use of oak in the wine, preferring to use concrete to age the wines. This winemaking style allows the Malbec in particular to showcase what makes the variety so delicious, the fruit.

Altos Las Hormigas is the pet project of one of the greatest and most awarded winemakers in the world Alberto Antonini, he wanted to show that Argentina did have the same standards of terroir that the “old world” had. The project has taken over 20 years and he has enlisted some of the greatest names in wine including the famous Argentina agronomist Carlos Vazquez (20 years with Catena) and Pedro Para Phd (the world’s leading Terroir Specialist) to find site specific sites where Malbec will flourish, and moving away from the old thinking of altitude being the most important factor in the production of malbec. The results of this effort are stunning wines that genuinely offer a sense of individual place, where the winemaking is doing as little as possible to influence the wines.
