Join us at Loki Great Western Arcade for our most popular event — Cheese and Wine Tasting! Discover new, intriguing pairings alongside classic duos in a fun and educational Saturday afternoon experience. Loki’s experts will guide you through seven carefully selected wines from their extensive collection, each thoughtfully paired with artisan cheeses from our favourite suppliers.
The wines featured in our tasting are exclusively chosen from Loki’s extensive and thoughtfully curated collection. Our team goes the extra mile — traveling near and far — to ensure only the finest bottles make it to our shelves, guaranteeing our customers an experience that’s both exceptional in quality and value.
At this event, we’ll be presenting seven distinctive wines, each meticulously selected to enhance the flavours of seven artisan cheeses. Over the course of two hours, your taste buds will be treated to a series of expertly paired wines and cheeses sourced from our most trusted suppliers. Led by our knowledgeable host, the tasting will explore the art of pairing, revealing why certain cheeses and wines create a perfect match, while debunking the myth that a single bottle of Port is all you need for a true cheese and wine experience.
Here are the cheese and wine pairing examples we tried during one of our previous events:
Pierre Paillard ‘Les Parcelles’ Champagne NVwith Délice de Bourgogne: a great matching based on texture where the high acid of the Champagne cuts through the fatty/creamy texture of the cheese.
Philippe Portier Quincy with Caerphilly: Caerphilly is quite light in flavour and is well suited to a crisp, refreshing, non-oaked white like a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc.
Rafael Palacios ‘Louro’ Godello with Cave Aged Gruyere: these wines can be a touch more rich and fruity in the mid-palate and so can take on a cheese with more character such as the Gruyere.
Hay Shed Hill Cabernet Sauvignon with Cashel Blue: this pairing is one that showcases a mild and creamy blue cheese (from Ireland) with the bold blackcurrant fruit notes of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine should display greater fruit intensity after the cheese is consumed.
San Marzano Talo Primitivo with Provolone Piccante: this combination is one of complete contrasts between the slight hint of sweetness in the Primitivo and the very piquant nature of the Provolone Piccante.
Gerard Bertrand Banyuls with Colston Bassett Stilton: Banyuls makes a great lighter alternative to Port, but does still partner perfectly with Stilton.
Charles Hours ‘Uroulat’ Jurancon doux with Pecorino Toscana Fresco served with honey: Jurancon is a French sweet wine that is normally cheaper, less sweet, less viscous and less oaky than Sauternes. The cheese in this case is young and is basically just a cheesy vehicle for the italian honey, which will overlap beautifully with the Jurancon.
Enjoy a gourmet afternoon that’s all about delighting the senses and expanding your taste horizons!
