We are joined by Lucy Hill-Smith from Hill-Smith Family Wines, one of the iconic Australian producers, and one of only three producers that have been listed in every year of Matthew Jukes’s 100 Best Australian Wines since the first publication 20 years ago!
The Hill-Smith family are Australian wine royalty, however the Jewel in the Crown for the family is the iconic wine producer Yalumba. Yalumba is truly an Australian icon, with a relentless focus on producing the best wines they can from the Barossa Valley. Their attention to detail has meant that they even make their own wine barrels in their own cooperage (the only one in the Southern Hemisphere) this attention to detail goes some way to showing why they consistently produce some of the best wines in Australia.
During this tasting, we will focus on the three key grape varieties from the Barossa (Viognier, Grenache & Shiraz) served in pairs. This will allow you to see the comparison between different winemaking and how these grape varieties can be so varied although they are made in the same region.
We will have a small food pairing element of this dish pairing the Viognier with some Chinese dumplings so you can see the versatility of these wines for food pairing.
Wines on tasting:
Jansz Brut NV
Yalumba Samuels Collection Viognier
Yalumba Virgilius Viognier
Yalumba Samuels Collection Bush Vine Grenache
Yalumba Tricentenary Grenache
Yalumba Samuels Collection Shiraz
Yalumba The Steeple Shiraz
About Lucy Hill-Smith
Lucy Hill-Smith, descendant of Yalumba’s founder, Samuel Smith, was destined to be involved in
the family business. She grew up with the winery as a giant playground, with weekends spent
roaming the vines with her two sisters. Whilst never sure what her future might hold, her childhood
at Yalumba certainly helped determine her path into the wine industry.
Lucy completed a Bachelor & Honours of Interior Architecture at the University of South Australia.
However, prior to pursuing her career as an designer, Lucy was keen to dip her toes into the world
of wine and made her way to South Africa for vintage at a family friend’s winery, Radford Dale.
Following vintage, Lucy moved to the UK to work in the world of Architecture & Design and, whilst
working, completed a Masters in Marketing & Business.
After several years working in the UK in the design industry, in 2023, Lucy knew it was the right
time to embark on the next chapter of her career and return to the family fold. Along with her sister,
Jess, she is part of the 6th generation of the family business and joined in advance of the Yalumba
175th birthday. Lucy currently lives and works in London, acting as the family ambassador, looking
after the fine wine portfolio throughout the UK and Europe.
