We are joined by Shirley Tan from Silver Heights winery in China, for our very first Chinese wine tasting. Chinese wine is taking the world by storm at the moment, fast becoming the largest wine producer in the world, and it is the super-premium category that is rapidly expanding with a number of state-of-the-art wineries being built.
Silver Heights are one of the biodynamic pioneers in China, they have 70 hectares of vineyards in the East Helan Mountain,
Ningxia. They focus on minimal intervention winemaking, with an aim to produce one of the best quality wines in the world. As you can see below these wines are super-premium in price, and I think that shows the ambition of the region to produce wines of significant international quality.
The Ningxia region is the heartland of fine wine production in China. Wine growing has been taking place there since the 1980’s with large producers Great Wall and Chaghu producing volume-driven wine. It was not until the 2000’s that fine wine production came to the area. The potential of the area has resulted in big European names like Rothschild, LVMH and Pernod Ricard investing in wineries in the region. The area is on the same latitude as Sicily/Etna, but at 1000m above sea level the region provides for a large diurnal range meaning that harvests can be late September/October giving the region a long ripening period, and it one of the keys to the success of wine in the region.
